WTA Education Services developed the concept and materials for the Canal Wildlife Challenge—which aimed to help young people understand and enjoy the natural world of canals through a variety of hands-on activities. An “Eco-detective” survey was developed to gather data about the biodiversity alongside canals and was used by British Waterways to produce a baseline of The Canal Wildlife Challenge included · Safety First! handbook · An activities wallet · Recording forms booklet · Return envelope for mailing back results · A sheet of “I’m doing the Waterways Challenge” stickers. The Activities wallet contained descriptions and instructions for eight separate activities, which could be used by school groups or families. Participants were encouraged to mail their results to British Waterways for inclusion in their Biodiversity Action Plan.
