Applying Action Competence

Davy Down Trust

The intention of the pack is to support local schools wishing to use the resources at Davy Down, including:

· The River Mardyke

· A pond

· New woodland

· Meadow areas

· The Mardyke Valley and ancient woodland

Davy Down is a unique facility in Thurrock available for educational use. It is managed by the local community for recreational purposes and to introduce local schools to the countryside on their doorstep.

The environmental education programmes contained within the pack are child-focused activities utilising the three different habitats: woodland, meadows, and wetland (including the pond and stream).

The objectives detailed for each of the programmes in this pack should assist in determining exactly what you want the pupils to learn from their visit. The programmes are designed to be linked together allowing for a full day of activities. Alternatively, it is possible to adjust them for a series of lesson length visits.

The pack is organised into curriculum-based sections for: English, Geography, and Science. The data collection exercises in geography and science are also relevant to the Maths and Information Technology requirements of the curriculum.

For each subject area, the pack contains:

· learning objectives

· an introduction to the activities that can be used on the day

· the photocopy masters needed for use with the children on the day.
